JEFF GRANTHAM WOODTURNING

ABOUT

MY JOURNEY
"DO WHAT YOU LOVE..."

"Do what you love and the rest will follow" - that's what I've always advised my kids.  After nearly 20 years in corporate life, and inwardly feeling like a hypocrite for not following my own advice, I finally took the plunge.  The confluence of eroding job security & satisfaction, paired with the discovery of something that I had a gift for and could joyfully do all day every day, brought us to this decision.  It's certainly a risk, and a stepping out of my comfort zone, but it's with faith and optimism that we are embracing this new chapter!  I’m truly grateful to all who have taken an interest in my work and/or have purchased from me in the past.  And especially to my wife, who has been such a great supporter of me chasing my dream.

PHILOSOPHY
A PASSION FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

A subtle curve that begs to be caressed; a sublime finish that brings out a wood's true beauty; the perfect integration of embellishments and design elements.  All of the details that add up to a piece which exudes gravitas and presence.  These are some of the things I strive for in my work, and there is nothing more satisfying to me than when you hit the mark and are able to share that with a happy customer.

crafts-man-ship: the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand; artistry

In an age when so much of what gets made is intended to be disposable, I find great joy in creating pieces meant to last.  I’ve learned many lessons in life about doing things the ‘right’ way no matter how trivial the task.  That, paired with my somewhat OCD personality, has lent itself towards my desire to make things to a high quality standard of craftsmanship.

In my craft, that translates into ensuring every curve flows and is pleasing to the eye; sanding to perfection so that no visible scratch marks remain; and finishing with a durable, high-quality, and piece-appropriate treatment.  You can rest assured that whether you buy a piece from me directly, or through a gallery, they are all made to the same high standards one would expect in gallery pieces.

All of these steps require more time in the making, however the results I believe speak for themselves.  So know that while the initial cost in purchasing a piece from me may be higher than you could find elsewhere, no shortcuts have been taken, every piece is unique, and it’ll last for life.  And if it doesn’t, I’ll refund, replace, or repair it.  Because I want each person that buys from me to feel as thrilled with their piece(s) as I do in making them.
