FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Shipping and Handling:

  • All orders in the continental USA are shipped via either USPS or UPS, depending on size and location.

  • For shipping outside the US,  please contact me and I can provide a quote prior to ordering.

What is your return policy?

  • I want you to feel completely delighted with your purchase.  If for any reason you are not, you can return the item(s) to me.  All returns must be requested within 30 days of purchase, and purchased items must be in original, unused and undamaged condition.  To initiate a return request, please contact me.

What kind of warrantee do you offer?

  • If you ever have any issues with one of my pieces, I want to know about it.  And, if necessary, I will return or replace any piece that is defective, assuming that the damage is not caused by negligence.

Do you take orders for custom / commission pieces?

  • Absolutely!  If you're not finding what you are looking for in the shop, feel free to contact me to discuss what you're looking for.  From there we can agree on a design, timeline, and price.  You can also look through the galleries for ideas of what types of things are possible.

What is your lead-time for a custom order?

  • Depending upon the piece and current schedule, it could take anywhere from 1 month up to 4-5 months to complete.  Bowls for example require drying time between rough and finish turning, as well as curing time for the finish, and so should be ordered at a bare minimum of 3 months in advance... 4-5 months in advance is safer.

BOWL-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

Why do your bowls seem on the pricy side?

  • If you're looking for the cheapest route, then buying from me probably isn't your best option.  In all my work, I put a heavy emphasis on the highest quality and craftsmanship.  That means taking the time to ensure all of the little things - like ensuring a smooth, uninterrupted curve; proper wall thickness for weight balance; sanding to a flawless surface; and applying a finish that will last for years - are all done well.  All of my bowls are turned to the same gallery-quality level, regardless of whether they go into a gallery or not.  When you factor in the additional time required for these steps, and that these are heirloom, one-of-a-kind pieces that can last for generations when well-cared for, I think you'll find that they're actually quite fairly priced.

Are your bowls food-safe?

  • Absolutely.  Despite some opinions to the contrary, all finishes are in fact food-safe once fully cured.  That's why all of my bowls cure for at least 4 weeks prior to being released.  The beauty of my finish is that, unlike many others commonly used, it won't require any maintenance or touch-up for many years.

What size bowl should I choose?

Here are some general guidelines on bowl sizing.  If you have specific questions, you can always contact me and I'd be happy to discuss your needs!  Custom orders are welcome if you don't find what you're looking for in the Shop.

  • Under 9 inches:  serve 1 individual side salad; great for serving snacks, or chopping herbs

  • 9 - 10 inch bowls:  serve 2-3 side salads or 1 individual dinner salad.  Great for popcorn!

  • 11 - 13 inch bowls: Serves 4-5 side salads.  These are ideal for newlyweds or families of 4ish.  Most popular size!

  • 14 - 15 inch bowls:  serve 8 side salads.  Perfect for larger gatherings, entertaining, and as centerpieces.

  • Over 15 inches:  serve larger gatherings of up to 12; these make great statement bowls in your dining room!

How do I care for my new bowl?  Is it difficult?

  • Contrary to some beliefs, caring for your wood bowl is actually quite easy.   When needed, you simply hand-wash your bowl with warm water and mild soap, and dry it immediately afterwards.  The main things you want to avoid are dishwashers, microwave ovens, or submerging the bowl in water.  I've posted full instructions on the Cleansing and Caring for Your Wood Bowl/Servers page.
